Add To Home Screen
Let players install your streamed game as an icon on their homescreen using Add to Home Screen (A2HS), with Android system prompts and iOS fallback modals.
Overview
Add to Home Screen (A2HS) lets players install your N2I-streamed game as an icon on their device's homescreen, similar to a native app install. The shortcut launches the game directly in the browser without a URL bar or navigation chrome.
Manifest
The N2I frontend automatically handles the Web App Manifest — you do not need to configure or host a manifest.json yourself. N2I generates it for your deployment, including icons, display mode, and other PWA properties.
Triggering the A2HS prompt
On Android, the system A2HS dialog can be triggered in two ways:
- Game-driven prompt — N2I shows the A2HS prompt after detecting a specific game asset (for example an icon or button in the game UI).
- N2I protocol URL — The app opens to a special N2I protocol URL:
n2i://a2hsorn2i://a2hs/whatever(any path aftern2i://a2hsworks). N2I detects this and triggers the A2HS prompt. For example, using Unity:
Application.OpenURL("n2i://a2hs/event1")
iOS fallback
On iOS, the browser does not support the programmatic A2HS prompt. N2I cannot show the native system dialog.
Instead, the client must design an HTML modal that guides the user through the manual steps: tap the Share button, then select Add to Home Screen. The modal should be themed to match the game's look and feel so the experience stays consistent for the player.
N2I can display this modal in two ways:
- Iframe — The client hosts the modal as a standalone HTML page. N2I loads it inside an iframe overlay when the A2HS trigger fires on iOS.
- Frontend integration — The client provides the modal's HTML and assets, and N2I integrates it directly into the N2I frontend.
Either way, the modal is shown automatically when an A2HS trigger is fired on iOS.
iOS users always need to manually confirm the action — there is no way to bypass this Apple restriction.
